Behind the Fashion: An interview with the Coordiantors

With less than a month left until this year's fashion show, Bukas sat down with the show's coordinators, Tina Busch, Francis "Jan Jan" Landoy and Sydney Valero.

How did you come up with the theme for the show?

Tina:

I remember we met in the summer and we were trying to think of something that was kind of simplistic, but still unique.

Jan Jan:

And we wanted to make it actually like a field fashion show, compared to last year, when it was a game show, we wanted to bring it back to it. Make it like what a fashion show really is.

Tina:

The whole Ivy League thing is a college feel, campus feel

What do you want the audience to experience when they watch the show?

Jan Jan:

Fear

Tina:

Fierce

Sydney:

Just a lot of excitement and we want them to really see how much dedication the club is willing to put forward with helping out the Milwaukee community and showing all the different talents people have too.

Jan Jan:

An appreciation for the arts. Because fashion show is more than just the fashion trends. There’s dancing. There’s an appreciation of  music in there. We’re trying to throw film in there too, like some sort of video. Just an appreciation for the arts and like an anticipation for what’s going to happen next.

Tina:

And the variety of culture. We’re not limited. We’re not just a Filipino Club. We are, but there’s like so many different cultural groups within our organization. It’s so exciting.

What are you guys most excited for this year?

Sydney:

I think we’re all just really excited to see the whole thing come together.

Jan Jan:

Kind of excited for it to be done (laughs). Because it’s really been stressful. But I’m really excited for the opening.

Tina:

The opening! And we’ve decided on who’s hosting. We wanted it to be funny. It’ll have a comedic feel, but still be…

Tina and Jan Jan:

Classy

Jan Jan:

Because the comedians are going to be making fun of our theme.

Tina:

But it will still be smooth.

What has been the most frustrating part so far?

Sydney:

We have a lot of scheduling conflicts. Just because we’re all really busy, we have other things going on but it’s totally worth it in the end.

How did you choose the charity?

Tina

My friend Maddy interned for Artworks for Milwaukee. She’s an advertising major minoring in art. She was telling me about Artworks because she volunteered there and interned there for a while and she said that it was an organization that was small and it needed more support. We wanted to do something related to the arts because those areas generally don’t get a lot of funding. And the fact that it supports youth is really important too.

Sydney:

We figured it targeted a lot of different aspects. It’s not just a non profit for Milwaukee. It shows artworks. It shows culture. It shows community. It shows a lot of different things we wanted to showcase.

For people who have not been to fashion show, or who have not been involved in fashion show, what would you say to get them pumped for the show?

Sydney:

Why wouldn’t they be pumped for the show? I don’t understand. (laughs)

Jan Jan:

It’s just an awesome experience. A lot of bonding, and you really see the work that was put into it, and the fact that you feel good that you’re going to support a show that you’re having fun at and that you’re really seeing the talents of everyone, but it’s all going to a good cause. We’re not taking the money. You don’t feel guilty in any way. You don’t feel jipped out because you know it’s going to a good cause.

Any final thoughts?

Tina: We want to fill the AMU ballrooms and get everyone pumped. Encourage other people to be aware of our organization and what we do because it’s really awesome.

Jan Jan:

It’s just good because it’s awesome to think that the largest charity event is run by a Filipino club on campus. I mean we’re a pretty big campus.

Tina:

Not a lot of people know that.

Jan Jan:

It’s not even a frat or a sorority. It’s a cultural club made by Filipinos that holding the largest charity event. It’s awesome to think that.
